When I was a little girl, around 2nd grade, as I would walk to school, another boy from my school would ride his bike slowly while I walked, calling me names and lighting matches that he would flick at me.
I didn't like that.
So I would imagine I had a trapeze, hanging over my head, that I could just hold onto and it would fly me safely to school. I thought about this every day. I longed to fly that trapeze...
In 3rd grade, he started a fire at our school and it had to close down for a few days for repairs.
Now he is in prison for life, but because I had that experience with him walking to school, I never played with him again, so he never hurt me.
And then years later, when I was talking to a friend of mine who worked with Cirque Du Soliel, he said, "Every once in a while, after the show, we let people fly on our trapeze...would you like that?"
I was immediately transported back to the daily imaginings of flying on a trapeze to school...
"YES! I would love that!" I hugged him.
A few days later, I was high on the trapeze under the Cirque Tent, while they coached me on how to fly. After my first flight, they told me "Vous être doué pour le trapèze." Which meant that I had a natural gift for the trapeze.
I loved trapeze so much that I went to Paris and studied trapeze with Jean Palacy, a wonderful coach. Then I got to fly trapeze in practice sessions with Cirque Du Soliel every time they came to NYC, where I was living, or when they were in Montreal or Toronto. I met one of my best friends from flying trapeze, Julie. I LOVE the trapeze. I flew it for 7 years.
I am so thankful for that rascal that made me use my imagination in order to escape him and that launched me into so much pleasure in flying trapeze. I will always appreciate him and love him and respect him and always hold him in the knowing that he is a divine gift to me.
